Techno Bully
The misuse of mobile phones and texting
The Team
Trisha Starrs has been writing and directing plays for over 20 years. The two actors appearing are Performing Arts graduates and have Working With Children certificates.
The Play
Kathy is the new girl at Crono Beach High. Shortly after arriving she finds herself being bullied via text message & social network sites. Kathy is finding it impossible to protect herself from this techno bullying and doesn’t know what to do when a boy in her class befriends her. He seems sympathetic to her situation but ‘… can she trust him?’
Kathy’s dilemma enables an exploration of techno bullying. The play exposes the misuse of new technologies and offers strong, positive strategies to deal with this growing problem. Actors also lead an informal and friendly debrief session after the play.
Comments
“Close to 300 students sat enthralled throughout. Their enthused questions at the conclusion further endorsed their total level of engagement. It was completely relevant. Great performance – appropriately pitched, lots of energy, lots of skill. The play explained vital issues and invited the students into a thought-provoking analysis of a world that is all too real for them and often not questioned.”
“Very positive. Students enjoyed the performance but also were very aware of the messages of the play. Presentation was very professional.”
“Techno Bully was well received by the students-they were engaged and follow up activities were great. So much better than a “lecture” about cyber bullying!”
